Although many of the student technicians presently working at the AOI are pipe organ performance majors, a student need not be an organist to get involved! There have been engineering majors, criminology majors, psychology majors, music education major and even a French horn performance major participating in the AOI’s organ building activities. If you're interested at all in what happens behind all those stops, keys, and pistons, the best way to learn is to help build an organ yourself. While many areas of pipe organ building require a knowledge of carpentry and engineering, many other areas require no prior experience.
Members of the community are also invited to participate in helping out at the shop! We have had several volunteers who come in for a few hours at a time whenever they have time, and they've helped immensely in the restoration and construction of the 3/14 Möller that currently sits in Sharp Concert Hall.
Finally, the American Organ Institute always welcomes donations to assist in funding current projects (click below for more information), allow us to bring in performers or organ-building experts, AOI organ maintenance, or make special gifts toward the rebuilding of the the 2/6 Morton, the 3/14 Wurlitzer Balaban II, or the installation of the 4-4/86 M. P. Möller Opus 5819.
If you're interested in volunteering at the shop, or helping out in any other capacity, please email the AOI at: aoi@ou.edu or call at: (405) 325-7829. The donation form can also be downloaded below.
