At a time when pipe organs and organ departments are fast disappearing, the University of Oklahoma’s American Organ Institute stands to reclaim, reinvigorate and reinvent the time honored traditions of pipe organ building and playing by preparing and equipping students for careers as performers, teachers and technicians.

Our students study the traditional classical and sacred repertoire, focusing on both historical performance practice and playing for contemporary audiences and congregations. In addition, the AOI offers students the rare opportunity to study theatrical pipe organ performance. Study of the theatre organ offers a unique opportunity for insight and preservation of an aspect of the United States’ rich musical heritage, as well as opening the doors to new musical skills and techniques which have great relevance to the wider aspects of today’s organ profession.

“This Institute… will be of great benefit to organ builders in the United States by providing a stable source of young people dedicated to organ building and with enough training to get a good start on a career.” - Jack M. Bethards, President and Tonal Director, Schoenstein & Co. Organ Builders
